You need to be consistent when sending your email newsletter campaigns so that your readers will get familiar with your schedule. Remember you need to send something at least once a month to keep the interest, if you leave it too long, they may forget who you are and how they know you which will lead them to unsubscribe. On the other hand you don’t want to annoy your readers either by bombarding them everyday, so you need to find the balance which works the best for your audience. You can also test which days of the week get the best response and gage your future schedule on those findings.
When you’re starting out you may want to create different formats of your newsletter and see which is best received by your readers, and then settle on the one that works the best for you. This helps your customers to know where to go for the information they are most interested in. Use your brand name in your mailings so your customers know this message is from you. Some mail sending programmes have excellent reporting tools which will provide you with the data you need to see how certain items performed and allow you to review your content effectively.
People are very interested when they come across something that will be beneficial to them. So Include specials and competitions on products and services in your email messages,
Give your readers interesting information on how to do something, this will make them want to read your email even more and also boost traffic to your website. Don’t only email your readers when you want something out of them, send holiday greetings too and they will come to appreciate your emails even more.
If you have a blog and regularly publish content to it, you don’t have to worry about creating new content for your newsletter, you can publish excerpts of your blog with links to the full content. It is the same with social media, if you are an active user on facebook and twitter for instance you can also link to that content. This a great way of driving traffic to your blog and social media profiles. Some online email marketing services offer tools which let your readers share your campaign via social media which is a great way of increasing your reach.
Be sure to use an online email programme for sending your email newsletters. There are plenty free ones out there and some you may have to pay for but only once you have a certain amount of subscribers. By using one of these email programmes your database will be cleaned of all duplicate email addresses as well as addresses that are no longer valid and also of role based email addresses which are generally used for businesses eg. firstname.lastname@example.org. You will also be provided with detailed reports of each campaign you send so that you can alter your content each month according to what gets the best response from your readers.
Unfortunately you can’t just select all the contacts you have in your address book and add them to your database. Although there is nothing stopping you from doing this, the general rule is to email friends. family or customers inviting them to join your email marketing list, that way they choose whether or not they want to join and you won’t be labelled evil spammer by anybody and can avoid any legal issues later down the line.
The best way to get more names for your database is to add a signup form on your website. That way you will have a clear opt in from visitors to your site that they want to receive your updates vie email. Some email prgrammes have apps available for you to add signup forms to your facebook page too. You can even encourage people to sign up by giving them an incentive such as receiving a discount or a free ebook etc.
